| 概要 | Collected biographies of exceptional women, a prolific genre in the Edo period (1603–1867), have served as important sources for women’s history. Cataloging women from the past whose behavior is worth emulating, these collections draw from a wide range of literary works and show how the life stories of women have been constructed over the centuries, often through the eyes of male writers and artists. How do men tell stories about exceptional women of the past? Why do these visual and textual representations of women matter? How has historical fiction shaped our understanding of women’s history? These are the questions I will address by focusing on one such collection that showcases one hundred women from ancient to early modern Japan. Titled One Hundred Exemplary Women, One Poem Each (Retsujo hyakunin isshu, 1847), the collection presents each of the one hundred women through a poem, a portrait, and a brief story highlighting how they made their mark on history. |
