概要 |
This paper will report the results of an analysis of timed essays written by Japanese EFL students in order to validate the claim that a process approach to teaching writing is expected to have a positive effect on students performing well on a timed essay. During the spring semester of 2022, 19 freshmen at pre-intermediate levels took a writing course with the instructions of a process approach, and they composed timed essays at the beginning and at the end of the course. For essay analysis, the concept of move analysis was applied (Swales, 1990; Bhatia, 1993; Henry and Roseberry, 2001). Analysis of pre-essays and post-essays indicates that a huge improvement was identified in post-essays in various aspects, including the total word count, the organization, and the quality of thesis statement, topic sentences and supporting details. The findings from this analysis support the claim that a process approach can improve students writing performances in a timed essay format. |
