概要 |
This paper studies Keisho-in, the mother of the Tokugawa shogun Tsunayoshi, and her role as cultural patron in the Edo period. She has often been harshly criticized in Japanese history, but here I focus on her devotion to religious institutions to consider her efforts to create networks of patronage. In particular, I argue that her activities must be viewed within the context of cultural patronage as an element of accepted governing practices. Furthermore, with hindsight, we can now examine her contributions to the rebuilding of JapanÅfs cultural legacies in the post-Sengoku period. |
